Car Insurance in Germany Explained
Kfz-Versicherung is mandatory and the pricing system is unusually mechanical. Once you understand the four factors, you can predict your premium and cut it substantially.
The three levels of cover
| Cover | Pays for | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Kfz-Haftpflicht | Damage you cause to others | Everyone — legally required |
| Teilkasko | Theft, fire, hail, storm, glass, animal collision | Cars roughly €3,000–15,000 |
| Vollkasko | All Teilkasko plus your own fault damage and vandalism | New, financed or leased cars |
What drives the price
- Schadenfreiheitsklasse (SF-Klasse) — your claim-free years. SF 0 for a new driver, rising to SF 35+. The discount can be 70% or more.
- Typklasse — a risk rating for your exact model, updated yearly by the GDV. A Golf 1.6 TDI and a Golf R sit in very different classes.
- Regionalklasse — based on your Zulassungsbezirk. Moving from rural Bavaria to Berlin can raise the premium 30%.
- Jährliche Fahrleistung — declared annual mileage. Be honest; a claim with a wildly wrong figure gets reduced.
Ways to genuinely lower it
- Raise the Selbstbeteiligung (deductible) — €300/€150 is the common sweet spot
- Insure as a Zweitwagen on a household policy — often starts at SF ½ instead of SF 0
- Take over a relative's SF-Klasse if they give up a car (legal and common)
- Werkstattbindung — agree to use the insurer's garage network for 10–20% off
- Pay annually rather than monthly
- Restrict the driver circle to named people
The switching window
Most policies renew on 1 January with a notice period of one month, so 30 November is the practical deadline to cancel. Comparison via Check24, Verivox or directly with HUK, Allianz and the big direct insurers is worth doing every year — loyalty is not rewarded here.
You need an eVB number from your chosen insurer before you can register the car. Getting one does not oblige you to buy the policy.
After an accident
At fault, your SF-Klasse is downgraded (Rückstufung) and the premium jumps for years. For small damage it is often cheaper to pay out of pocket — you have a window after the insurer settles to reimburse them and keep your class (Rückkauf des Schadens). Ask for the figure before you decide.
