What Does Nm (Torque) Mean?

Newtonmeter (Nm) measures torque: the twisting force the engine produces. Power tells you what the car can do flat out; torque tells you what it feels like at 2,000 rpm on the way to work.

Torque versus power in one sentence

Torque is the shove; power is the shove multiplied by how fast the engine is spinning. That is why a high-torque diesel feels muscular from low revs while a high-power petrol needs revving to deliver.

Where the peak matters more than the number

Always look at the rpm range the torque is quoted over, not just the figure. "320 Nm at 1,750–3,000 rpm" is a broad, usable plateau. "320 Nm at 4,800 rpm" means you have to work for it.

EnginePowerTorqueCharacter
VW 2.0 TDI150 PS360 Nm from 1,600 rpmEffortless overtaking, lazy
VW 1.5 TSI150 PS250 Nm from 1,500 rpmLighter, needs more gearshifts
Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv-G150 PS213 Nm at 4,000 rpmRev-happy, weak low down
Tesla Model 3 RWD283 PS~420 Nm from 0 rpmInstant, no gearshifts

Why electric cars feel so quick

An electric motor makes maximum torque from zero rpm. That is why a modest 170 kW EV will out-accelerate a far more powerful petrol car away from traffic lights, even though the petrol car wins at 150 km/h.

What to look for when buying

Torque figures on turbocharged cars are usually "overboost" peaks held for a few seconds. Two cars with the same quoted Nm can feel quite different sustained.
