What Does Scheckheftgepflegt Mean?
Scheckheftgepflegt means the car has been serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule, with each service stamped in the Scheckheft (service book). It is the single most valuable line in a used car ad, and the easiest to fake.
What a genuine record looks like
- A stamp for every scheduled service, with date and mileage
- Mileages that increase steadily and match the current odometer
- No multi-year gaps in the middle
- Ideally invoices behind the stamps showing what was actually done
How to verify it
If the services were done at a brand dealer, the history is in the manufacturer's system. Ring any authorised dealer with the VIN and ask for the Wartungshistorie — most will read it out. A digital service record (VW, BMW, Mercedes all use one now) means no paper book exists, which is normal on newer cars, and the dealer printout is the proof.
Terms you will see alongside it
| Term | Means |
|---|---|
| Scheckheftgepflegt | Serviced to schedule, stamped |
| 1. Hand | One previous keeper |
| Unfallfrei | Seller declares no accident damage |
| Nichtraucher | Non-smoker car |
| Garagenwagen | Garage kept |
| Gepflegter Zustand | Subjective — means nothing legally |
| Bastlerfahrzeug | Project car; expect serious faults |
| Export / Teileträger | Not roadworthy; parts or export only |
What it does not tell you
A stamped book proves oil changes happened. It says nothing about how the car was driven, whether it was crashed, or whether the timing chain is about to stretch. Treat it as one input, not a clean bill of health.
