What Makes a Good First Car

A first car has a narrow job: teach you to drive confidently without costing you money you do not have. That points away from powerful, fashionable and complicated, and towards small, well-proven and cheap to insure.

The four criteria, in order

Get insurance quotes on specific cars before you shop. Two similar-looking hatchbacks of the same price can differ by several hundred euros a year, and engine size and insurance group matter more than age.

What to look for in the car itself

What to avoid, and why

Budget the whole first year, not the purchase

For a first car, the purchase price is often less than half of what the first year costs. Build the real figure before you commit: purchase, insurance, registration and transfer fees, an immediate service if the history is unclear, a set of tyres if the current ones are near the limit, and a repair buffer of at least €500–1,000.

A €3,000 car with €1,800 insurance, €400 of catch-up servicing and a €500 buffer is a €5,700 decision.

Where to look

A private sale from a long-term owner with a folder of receipts is usually the best value available to a first-time buyer, but it carries no warranty and demands a careful inspection — ideally by a mechanic or a professional inspection service. A dealer costs more and gives you legal recourse, which for a nervous first purchase can be worth the premium.

Either way, never buy the first car you see, and never buy without driving it.
